Myeongdong Kyoja Main Store Jung-gu Reviews from The Last Year
If you want rich, savory beef-flavored kalguksu, this is the place!
This place offers a great combination of spicy garlic kimchi, kalguksu, and dumplings. For more details, check out my Instagram!
Famous Mandu Restaurant with Consistent Quality (and queues)
This Mandu (dumpling) restaurant is my wife's favourite and it's our must visit when in Seoul. We were there for a late lunch/early dinner. While the timing was not peak dinner time the restaurant was already packed. We joined a queue (the staff asked if we are agreeable to share table with strangers and we said yes) and were allocated a small table without much wait. The menu is a simple one. We ordered a basket of Mandu and a bowl of noodles to share. This is a very efficiently run business: the food arrived fairly quickly. The dumpling was juicy. We love the food. The seating and space here is very tight so it's not a place where you would linger on after eating. The exit for the customers was through the back door so the whole process was well thought of. I would recommend Myeongdong Kyoja if you are in the area.
Same Food, Same House, Same Good Vibes for Decades
In my young age when there’s not enough provisions, knife-cut noodle(kalguksoo)was one of our staple. My mom made the anchovy broth first in a big black pot sitting at the front yard. She put some fire wood underneath it, made a fire, and simmered it for hours. While the broth made, she kneaded the flour dough, flattening it with a rolling pin on a Korean dwarf dining table, cutting the dough pieces into strips, sprinkled some flour over them not to stick together, dropped all the squiggle noodles, zucchini, onions into the pot. The good aroma of the broth filled the air, stimulating our appetites. Even since this knife-cut noodle became our comfort food, I often came here when I was in college with my date because this spot had been the ultimate date place where we could spend a good time, filling hungry tummies with good seasonal kimchi, generous noodles and broth in affordable prices. Now coming back to Korea after for 25years from outside, I still have a feeling even though this place has been a lot changed into the tourist destination, beaming with lots of tourists. Today I came here with my friends, eating kalguksoo and dumplings. It was same food, same way to serve, the same house, and same good vibes for decades.
I'll go every time I'm in Seoul
The food was awesome. It was a little uncomfortable sitting with strangers but got over it pretty quickly. This is a must for me to go every time I'm in Korea now.
The best Bibimguksu and Mandu in Seoul!🍜🥟
This korean restaurant received a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide, which is why I need to try it. I went to the restaurant with my sister, so we ordered two dishes: bibimguksu and mandu. The Bibimguksu, a spicy mixed noodles dish, is especially popular in the summer. It made me feel refreshed, and I am so in love with this dish. It is not too spicy. The Mandu, pork dumplings, have a very thin wrapper and taste amazing! I would give them ten out of ten. However, in this restaurant, you should pay in advance. I think it is a very good system to ensure the table turnover is fast! If I have a chance to come back again, I will definitely return to eat at this restaurant. ❤️🥟🍜
Warming noodles and dumplngs on a cold day
This establishment was recommmended to us by a family member, judging by the other reviews we were lucky on the day of our arrival that there was no queue. Once seated on the top floor at our tiny tiny and chairs, service was extremely efficient and in no time our noodle soup and steamed dumplings were on the table ready to eat. The dumplings were delightful, the noodle soup was piping hot and for me needed a little more flavour with the addition of sauce and a little kimchi. If you finish all your noodles you can ask the waitress for a free bowl of noodles. Not no time did we feel rushed to leave.
Definitely Worth Queuing For!
We had a shock when we arrived to see a long "snake" queue on the ground floor. It moved pretty fast and we were then told to go to the third floor. Surprise surprise, there is another loo..ong queue there. Apparently the first queue was just to split the patrons into first floor, second floor and third floor based on the number of people in your group. The real queueing only starts after you get the floor number. We ordered the hot favourites, and couldn't go wrong. Everything was delicious! Definitely worth the wait.
Not recommended! Do not waste money and time!!
A famous Michelin-listed restaurant. The taste is good, but not so good that you can only eat here! The customer service is the worst. The customer service is the worst, they treat the customers like objects. They want you to pay quickly, eat quickly, and go home! I don't want to go there again. I don't want to go there again. Gwangjang Market has a much higher level of customer service and taste than this place.
Worth The Hype
I went during peak lunch hrs. There was a line outside but it went by quick. Once you get seated you pick what you want to eat then you pay for your meal right after you order. Food came out super quick. The food was delicious and very well priced.
Delicious food with efficient service
Firstly, I reckon this restaurant has garnered a few negative feedback due to its fame and misunderstanding. The restaurant has a Michellin Bib Gourmand recommendation which is not the same as a Michellin Star. Thus if you're expecting a Michelling star service, ambiance and food, you're in the wrong place. The bib gourmand specifies Kyoja with good quality food and good value cooking which I completely agree. We almost did not visit this restaurant due to the number of negative reviews it has received however we were thankful we took the chance. We ordered the Kalguksu (knife cut noodles in warm broth), Bibim Naengmyeon (cold spicy buckwheat noodles) and the Mandus (pork meat dumplings) and they were all delicious. I've read reviews where the complain of the broth being overly garlicky and the kimchi too spicy which was not my experience. For me personally, the broth had great depth of taste with the garlic and onion base and I love spicy food thus the Kimchi was perfect. I would call the service we received efficient. We did not wait in line long and was ushered to our table for 2 in quick time. We were informed payment in advance was required and once we placed our order, food arrived pretty quickly as well. Usually this would usually mean the food is microwaved rubbish, however the advantage of having just 3 dishes on your menu means you can pre-prepare all the dishes while still serving them fresh and warm. I would revisit and not hesistate to recommend Kyoja.

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
