Mama Oakland will forever be loved in my heart.
My now fiancé and the staff there planned and executed my proposal to perfection. THANK YOU TO THE STAFF BEFORE AND AFTER MY PROPOSAL. It was truly unforgettable. The staff were so gracious to me and my fiancé. I c literally can't rave enough. I had no idea anything was planned because I was devouring my food. I don't even want to call it food, because it was so good and warm it felt like an edible hug. If I can bathe in the onion jam I would. Mama please keep making transcending dishes and unforgettable moments.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband and I came here on a Friday night for date night
My husband and I came here on a Friday night for date night and had a wonderful time. We were greeted by a very friendly host and our server greeted us and explained the menu upon arrival. She was the perfect combination of attentive and friendly without being overbearing throughout our meal. The menu here is seasonal, constantly changing, price fix for three courses but the menu is very reasonable for the cost of ~$40/person. My husband and I were feeling hungry, however and they give you the option to add things! We got basically everything you could get, they give you two options for each of the three courses and we got one of each to try everything, we added the focaccia, the meatballs AND a seasonal lamb chop with farro tabouleh. We were both stuffed and took home leftovers but it was worth it. Our appetizers were very good, the Zuppa toscana that night was creamy and delicious, and the asparagus and broccolini salad was light and fresh. The two pasta dishes, mushroom pappardelle and cannelloni with MAMA's sugo were delicious! The chocolate and fruit dessert were very satisfying. We enjoyed our add on dishes as well though the focaccia was a little more dry and crunchy than I'm used to and I'm not sure I'd get it again. It also filled us up so we couldn't enjoy our delicious entrees as much.

Loved Mama Oakland's menu and was an exciting date night out to try many dishes for my partner's birthday! My favorite dish was a mushroom papardelle, the pasta was fresh and chewy and I absolutely loved this dish, but I didn't feel that the other dishes wowed me the same. I did feel overall the portions were very small and if you came here very hungry, the entree may not feel satisfying. There were maybe less than 10 longer strands of pasta. I would normally decrease the rating, but this dish was so delicious that it made up for it. We also enjoyed the foccacia which was Service was quick and friendly. It feels fancy and nice, yet casual. Overall, I enjoy the concept and the changing menu, but think there could be a lot more value to make this a recurring spot.
Be the first to ReplyI wish we as a society could get over this pretentiousness.
You will never convince me that a teeny tiny meal (we literally left hungry) that's from a fixed menu of limited options, in a cramped little restaurant where you can't even sit comfortably, is worth the $250 we spent. That's for 2 people. Make it make sense. That being said, I do wanna mention that the risotto was fantastic. Not worth that price tag but very delicious nonetheless.

Staff: amazing Food: amazing Vibes: off the charts This was my fourth time eating here and I loveeeee how it's always different every time I come. I brought my parents for their anniversary and they loved it. The staff congratulated my parents on their anniversary as they would walk by our table which made the experience so much sweeter. Always a 10/10, Great experience. They had a carrot cake this time around and it was 12/10 - wish I could order it to take home!!! Also great portions I left feeling sooo full and happy. (Please make a pick up bakery thanks)
Be the first to ReplyThe service was okay.
The guy at the door was nice. Our waiter was kind of grumpy. When we asked him for help regarding what to get, he said he had no opinion about the specials and to just get one of each from the menu! Thanks, I guess. Oh, and he took a 20% service charge for 2 people. The soup was fair. The salmon salad was good. The clam pasta (special) was very salty, but the sugo was good. The dessert, marcisapon, was really good. The carrot cake was good. The meatballs and focaccia were really good. Overall good .

Everything here was so good! Very cute date night ambiance. The interior colors are warm and lovely, pistachio, rose, and caramel. Service was exceptional, attentive, and friendly waiter who gave great recs on wine pairing. Loved everything here! The beet salad with burrata was very beautiful and surprising. Bright orange beets feel like jewels - cold crisp textures against the buttery burrata. Very luxurious. The mamas sugo was delicious, and the spring risotto was bright and flavorful with the maitake. Was so full without feeling too heavy. Everything was well balanced in taste and I'm looking forward to coming back already!

Be the first to ReplyWe had a fantastic time here with our party of 5.
Not only were the food and wine incredibly delicious, but the service was outstanding. Our server was warm, funny, sweet and totally became part of our night. I love when the staff feels very invested in your experience and takes such an active role curating the meal and engaging with the group. Will definitely be returning again and again.

I have a suggestion for Mama's that will stop the many 2 star reviews...and the complaints about you rushing them to order and then out the door. You should have "SEATINGS." This is common in European restaurants and you are wannabe Euro as it is. This means you would have 2 or 3 blocks of time that people reserve for. One group is seated, eats, and finishes in the first seating. Then another group comes in for the second seating. Everyone knows the start and end for their stretch of time. This would eliminate the frantic servers nudging the diners along. Everyone could relax a little!
Be the first to ReplyCame here for the Oakland restaurant week special.
I had the garlic potato soup, ravioli, and the chocolate mousse dessert, focaccia, along with some wine. The food is delicious, though I recommend for the special also ordering the bread, the portions aren't huge, but with the bread I was full. The food was absolutely luxurious though, delicious, full of flavor, fresh. I especially like the sauce with the ravioli (which is one giant stuffed ravioli on top of the sauce) because it had some delicious chunks of meat but was also full of fresh tomato and herbs. Also don't skip on the wine the sparkling red wine is one of a kind and not too sweet. A good spot for a fancy celebration meal, as it's quiet and feels a bit elegant to be there.

I want to say the customer service is outstanding, very cozy inside. Definitely a date night type of place. The food is good. Very portion out. It's up on the higher side on the price but it's pretty amazing.

From the moment we got seated to when we left, everyone was super accommodating. Came here for their Restaurant Week menu. As a vegetarian, I was a little nervous about the vegetarian accommodation, but there was nothing to worry about. Our server was great and even offered to serve some of the meat options on the side so I could experience both starters. Starters:The potato chowder was delicious! It was creamy and flavorful and the peas added a great little crunch. Would definitely recommend. The salad was so good as well. I would have preferred it with a little less dressing, but the combination of the orange and the bitter veggies was perfect. Pasta:You can't go wrong with a pocket full of cheese, but this ravioli was sooo good. Probably one of the best I've had. I had the vegetarian marina sauce and thought it was the perfect compliment to the super soft, cheesy, and somewhat citrust pasta. My friend had the Sugo sauce and looveed it. Dessert:The sponge cake was pretty good too. My favorite part was the filling which had the toasted almond, pieces of graelpefruit and cream. The chocolate budino was super chocolatey and decadent. The addition of the brandied cherry made it a little extra special. Would definitely come back again.

I vomited after eating here and will never revisit under current management. I used to eat here back in the day, but new owners are unacceptable.
Be the first to ReplyA charming italian restaurant in Oakland.
This place is a no brainer for a date night. The prix fixe menu was top notch. I was traveling with my son at the weekend so we were able to cover most of what the menu offered. Very good quality. I was a little surprised by the fried chicken on the menu but it did not disappoint. Plenty of food and enjoyable atmosphere.

Mama Oakland is a fun, cozy Italian restaurant with delicious comforting foods and good service. The menu is largely prie fixe with some optionality within each course so you can choose your own adventure. The salad was a great way to start for me - light, citrusy, and tastyThe Sugo is very yummy and just a well-cooked pasta dish. Worth adding the meatballs to complement and share. The budino had good flavor and was a fantastic way to end the meal. Would recommend going to Mama! There's some outdoor seating as well.
Be the first to ReplyMy friends and I dined for a birthday.
Ambiance was cozy, yet elegant and intimate. Service was quick, but attentive. They gave us our time, let us enjoy our meal, and never interrupted conversation! Sometimes servers feel like they need to check up on their tables too much, but we had a great experience. Our server was a tall, older gentleman. He sold us on a bottle of wine that we all enjoyed, despite having different preferences. I'll definitely try to get his name the next time I go! Great food. Perfect portions. Will be back. ALSO: you must absolutely add on the focaccia bread!!! It's served with a side of butter and jam, melts in your mouth.

This food is so special and I always take people here to show it off. The wine shop down the way is also so great. It's homey and warm inside. The service is excellent.
Be the first to ReplyExtremely homey food - family recipes and such.
Almost has a Euro-vibe. Quaint, warm, hospitable staff. The meatballs!!!!! Don't miss those. Tender, juicy, flavorful, rich. The leek soup was great - sharing worked. The salad was good - some of those exotic lettuces are too bitter for some people. It was good - not Great. I think maybe too many disparate ingredients; simpler might be better. The risotto was very good. Not over the top crazy good, but very enjoyable.Pasta was good - meaty.I hear they'll cater to vegetarians. Given the limited options, short menu, pre-fix style; knowing they'll do Veggie is crucial.Good wine - not cheap, but a variety of interesting options.Tip included in price.

LOVED IT! mama oakland knows how to do food right! Right off the bat we were seated in a nice warm and ambient table and our server asked if we needed an explanation to the menu, after saying yes, she very kindly explained the menu and how everything worked. After that the servers came in one by one to place delicious dishes in front of us!The environment itself was so nice and the interior was very calming and aesthetically pleasing! Not to mention very affordable for the experience you get!We both loved everything about this place! Definitely worth every penny!

I wanted to dip my toe into the Michelin experience, and this was a great place to start. The ambience is very simple, clean and open. And the wait staff was very accommodating and knowledgeable. We started with an Italian white wine, then, to accompany the prix fixe dinner we added herbed focaccia bread, pan fried meatballs and steamed clams and mussels.Everything was delicious. The tomato bisque was the true standout for me, but my dinner companions loved the lasagna. Although the courses are small I felt perfectly satisfied. This is truly a hidden gem on Grand Ave.

Delicious pasta, great wine selection and service!! Sitting outside was ok but disrupted by cruising motorcycles going up and down the street - def recommend eating inside.

I had the pleasure of finally eating here last Friday and it was largely because the staff was kind enough to fit us in - what a fantastic experience!!! I'd looked at their reservation calendar at the beginning of the week & the time slot that coordinated with the end of our movie wasn't available, but we stopped by on the way to a different restaurant on the off-chance they'd had a cancellation that night. They hadn't, but made it work with our understanding that we had limited time - which we HAPPILY took. The food was truly incredible, the wine was delicious and the staff could not have been more gracious. Definitely would recommend a reservation...and I will for sure be making one in the very near future. I count myself pretty lucky that a gem like this is just right down the block from me. :)
Be the first to ReplyHands down my favorite restaurant in Oakland.
You can go many times and never get tired of it due to the ever changing, seasonal menu. The service is always impeccable. Quiz the staff on wine too-- they are super knowledgeable since Bay Grape Wine Bar is a sister property. If it's your first time, order the Sugo. It's delicious and a family recipe from the owners. Otherwise, go with your heart's desire (& stomach)! Everything will be delicious.
Be the first to ReplyWe celebrated our anniversary here last night.
Great food and service. If a carnivore like me you must order the meatballs. I had them as a side and mixed them into my bucatini with sugo sauce. Love the pre fix menus strategy- Eat what we cook. Bay Area folks can be a pain in the keister to serve with all their substitutions and diet restrictions. They have great food and a terrific wine list.
