A masterful dining experience
Ludwig van, located on a side street in the heart of Vienna's 6th district, is a not-so-hidden gem. In fact, it is one of Vienna's most compelling fine dining experiences. Upon entry to the restaurant one is welcomed by the owner-host, Olivier. As we were led to our table we noticed that a wooden Scrabble tile holder with our name spelled out had been set on the table, as had one on every table for every guest. Wow. Olivier, who is a true blue Austrian from the Tyrol region is married to an American wife, and loves to beguile his international guests with interesting conversation, especially when it comes to culinary comparisons between Austria and America. The restaurant's highly attentive and warm service is co-spearheaded by a fabulous sommelier, who can and will introduce you to some of Austria's most impressive and interesting wines. The menu's offerings, while not overly extensive, are still so inviting that it is not easy to choose among several savory options for each course. Of course, Olivier and his team are expert at helping their guests get to the choice that's right for them. The food service and plating were creative and ALL the dishes were delicious. One complaint that people sometimes have with Austrian cuisine is that too often even the "high end" versions of traditional Austrian dishes are just that - more refined, but still essentially the same dishes. Not at Ludwig van. Here the dishes are as interesting as they are good. The ambiance of the restaurant could be described as "gemütliche Eleganz" (cozy elegance), and indeed the finely carved wooden panels, ceiling curves, and unusually comfortable chairs made for a relaxing setting for a well paced meal. In short, everything about Ludwig van was well conceived at every level of relevant detail. It offers one of Vienna's most memorable dining experiences.
Be the first to ReplyGreat meal, beyond all expectation.
Unbelievably great meal and experience, good people, great food, awesome host. We chose to do the Chef’s tasting menu and the wine pairing, and so glad we did. We chose the six course tasting menu, and each one was better than the last. Every course was served with a wine that was matched impeccably to balance out the flavors. What really made the evening special were all of the conversations with Oliver, the owner of the restaurant, who really made the evening such a pleasure

It was my first time in this amazing restaurant but definitely not the last. The food, the wine, the service are nothing less than outstanding. The ambience is very charming and the music in the background enhanced the whole experience. A perfect place for a romantic dinner, or an evening out with friends. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolute top class in service, food and friendliness
The restaurant is located in a historic building and is very authentically and stylishly furnished. There is an old well shaft in the floor of the dining room. The owner and his team work well together - you notice that from the very first moment. The selection of food and drinks should leave nothing to be desired, everything is coordinated. The food is exquisite, every course is a delight, a feast for the palate. You can see the love for the product and the guest. If you want to spend a wonderful evening, this is the right place. Anytime and we would be happy to come back!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Experience!
We stumbled upon Ludwig van after walking around the Nachsmarkt. It was too late for lunch and too early for dinner - so we had a beer instead. Owner Oliver was great - showed us Beethoven’s apartment upstairs - shared his background with us Sooooo - we came back for dinner. Michael was our server and was OUTstanding - Oliver came by and we picked up our great conversation. Interestingly, Chef Andreas is #70/100 best chefs in the world. This was our last night in Vienna - and we wanted to have a special last meal. The food was outstanding and we tried many new things - the wine pairings were a huge highlight as well. Will definitely return next time I’m back in Vienna! Cheers!!
Be the first to ReplyInconspicuous but top
A restaurant that looks inconspicuous from the outside turns out to be an island of pleasure. Cooked and served with love, it's a real treat for the palate. Not cheap - but recommended.

What a find……. Wonderful restaurant serving seasonal modern Austrian dishes. The setting is traditional , the service is impeccable and friendly. Superb Austrian wine suggestions. Delightful food , staff really were fantastic. The dessert was sublime and we never took a photo😳😍. We chose four courses and this was interspersed with sorbet -apricot and ginger fantastic. This is exceptional dining and not expensive
Be the first to Replyviennese but a bit different
we just had the four course menu and it was plenty. It had interesting mixes of flavours and textures . We suspended vegetarianism for the evening and did not regret - very excellent Austrian pinot noir - excellent evening.
Be the first to ReplyOur best dining experience in Vienna
We spent a week in Vienna in early November and ate at a number of different restaurants. The best food and experience was at Ludwig Van. It’s high-end dining, but seemed like value when compared to a range of other places we ate. The owner found time to share his food and wine philosophy with us, which isn't always welcome, but in this case added our our enjoyment.

Felt like typical tourist trap. Ok food, but michelin star?!? Was a dark and cold place and the wining pairing was of limited quality and quantity
Be the first to ReplySymphony of flavours
An ode to Beethoven in a place where he himself lived for one year, a symphony of flavours and great service! For a michelin star it has a comfortable atmosphere. A super enthusiastic waiter who explained the correct order of eating our cheese and treated us to some fine dessert wine. The personal note which got us 9 points for scrabble, is a bonus!
Be the first to ReplyA feast for the eyes and the palate
We had the 5 course/5 wine degustation here last night and every course was just beautiful to look at and the tastes, a perfect balance without sutle flavours being overwhelmed by stronger ingredients. The dinner was the "show", it is not often that my wife and I spend over three hours at a restaurant. So, when you have had enough of schnitzels that are bigger than the plate, then Ludwig Van is one of those places where Viennese culture and food coexist perfectly. Owner Oliver's staff were experts and guided us through every course and each wine. They certainly complimented Andreas's fine offerings.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic experience at Ludwig-Van
Greeted by Oliver with a glass of champagne to celebrate my wife's birthday set the tone for a super evening. We had the tasting menu with wine pairings and cannot speak more highly of the entire experience. The food was excellent- every course was expertly presented using the finest ingredients. Service was spot on - attentive, but not intrusive. Our waiters guided us through the food and wine selections and were both knowledgeable and friendly. It's not cheap, but worth the cost.
Be the first to ReplyVery good but ending a bit flat
Service started out great - the staff were accommodating of my dietary restrictions and even gave me what turned out to be a complementary item. The food was also excellent, with the highlight being the asparagus dish with the white sauce. Service was very attentive throughout the main part of the meal, but towards the end when a big group arrived, the staff seemed stressed, focused on them and to have forgotten about me. There were two hiccups at the end of the meal: (1) dessert took 30 minutes to serve, and the staff only told me of the delay and apologized for it when I asked after 20 minutes where my dessert was, and (2) when I was given the card machine with no tip on the amount, I asked to add a tip, and then the very pleasant waiter automatically added a 15% tip without asking me how much I wanted to tip. I paid it because of the complementary item and the overall good service, but adding that amount, which is not customary (5-10% is customary in Vienna, with 15% for excellent service) was presumptuous.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Find Lovely Restaurant and Host
We were so lucky to find this lovely restaurant. It had a lovely homely feel inside the food was excellent and the owner was really helpful with our food and the wines especially . We visited on the 14th April 2022. So sorry it has taken this time to get around to writing this review. We could not fault anything. If you want a really lovely restaurant with good food and wine this is it. With a tremendous host. I cannot rate this high enough. The wine flight really complimented all the dishes we had. If we did not like any it would be changed for something else he felt that went with the dish. Thank you so much.
Be the first to ReplyGreat host - Great food !
We had the best time in Ludwig Van. The food was great, and the wine pairing was amazing. The host was very polite and nice and offered us an amazing liqueur which he makes by himself and gave us many tips for our staying in Vienna.
Be the first to ReplyLovely with some hickups
I have already been here three times. The first and second time I‘ve been here with my partner I loved all the courses we got and the staff did a great job.
The third time wasn’t as pleasant, sadly.
I wanted to show this restaurant to my brother, since I was pleased with the previous experiences, however this time the food was 3 out of 6 dishes not very enjoyable. The staff looked a bit stressed out and after asking a waiter about the red wines, he said he‘d bring us some for tasting but never did so.
Definitely a must!
Excellent and creative food, excellent wine with attentive and friendly service and a very interesting menu .
altogether an excellent evening !
Can be highly recommended
