Izakaya MEW New York Reviews from The Last Year
I stumbled upon here by accident once when lots of other
I stumbled upon here by accident once when lots of other restaurants were too full to take me and a group. We got here when the restaurant just opened which is lucky because I find out it gets packed QUICK. Food is amazing and the vibes are really nice. I got the kimchi soba my first time here and loved it! 2nd time coming (pictures listed) I took my Canadian friend here since he wanted izakaya and he was very impressed. Apparently all his friends in Canada also knew about this place and approve. He loved the kirin beer float (I was indifferent personally) but if you're a beer lover I would reccomend you trying it out. I got to try out more food choices here and have been happy with everything I've ordered. Unfortunately I'm making this review a week after so I can remember everything that I ate, but i haven't had anything u ordered I have not approved of
Food and service were okay for the price.
It was tough getting waitress/waiter attention. They were too busy. Restaurant was crowded. Ambiance was so so. We were placed under a leaky AC and were told to move. Hate when that happens. Ruined it for me. I don't think I'll be back. Probably was just that day. But I don't wanna another experience.

waited 45 minutes , restaurant is small and a little crowded, but food is very delicious, we ordered ramen and rolls and soap , all are very good! That's why it is always full. Good memories there
Izakawa MEW has the vibe of a hidden gem.
The entrance is easy to miss in the street, but when you go down the stairs it's a hopping scene. Creative sushi and drink options.

Love this place! Great ambiance, great service and fantastic food!! We didn't have a reservation but the staff was able to seat us, party of 4, at 5:30pm. We were told we had 60 min- NO PROBLEM. Food came out fast and was delicious. The sushi was very fresh and the staff are attentive & quick to fill drinks.

The food was amazing! We got the kimchi udon and the ramen which was to die for! We also order gyoza and the chicken wings which were good but not something you couldn't get anywhere. The only reason why I gave 4/5 stars was because of the service. Our food came out at all different times. We had one appetizer come out with one entree and our drinks didn't come until after the first entree. The waitress also hurried us to order and pay so they could seat more people making us feel extremely rushed. Otherwise good place and the ambiance is very nice!
Great food and quick food arrival, but the frustration we
Great food and quick food arrival, but the frustration we had with the wait (1 hour and 40mins) and female host on Friday made me not want to return. As an establishment that has such long waits, their text system doesnt confirm our place on line, unlike other restaurants. I arrived at 5pm to put my name down for the party, got told it was a 1 hour wait - that's fine it's popular. I call an hour in to see if I missed my text, only to be told it's another 40 minutes, and remain on the line. 40 minutes later, I come back to MEW with a new host at the front. Turns out I was no longer on the list! Fortunately the new male host tried to make it right and get us seated. Food was great and came out lightning fast, even before our drinks. I recommend the kimchi cream udon and octopus karaagd. I would not recommend the frozen beer. Nor would I recommend the service that evening.
It was so much fun trying so many different things.
It was yummy but I feel like I had higher expectations. The drinks were okay. The food came out relatively quick and the vibes were good inside. My favorite thing was the corn- and that is coming from someone who LOVES tuna, Kara aga, shishito peppers, and octopus- all things that we ordered. Def a place I would try once and be satisfied- I don't feel the need to go back. This review feels negative but it was really yummy- I think I just had really high expectations also some of the dishes had wasabi which I'm not a fan of and it made it difficult to eat some of it so make sure you ask before you order if there is wasabi on the dishes already
I came in over the winter so this review is a bit outdated.
As a Flushing resident, I was devastated when MEW closed their Queens location on Northern Blvd. The scallop crudo has always been a favorite of mine; all around fresh quality seafood and comforting warm dishes. I'm also a sucker for Ankimo so I was ecstatic to have come in when it was on the menu for the season. I believe it was paired with hamachi but I think it could've done without. Not complaining tho. The shishito peppers were a bit under-seasoned. My table all agreed that it was lacking in salt and the char wasn't best. As one of the most iconic and fairly simple to prepare izakaya fares, I was disappointed. We also ordered the Omu Soba, Salmon Don, and cheesy scallop dish that was also seasonal. The omu soba was nothing to write home about, the omelette was much thinner than we expected and the stir fried soba tasted almost like it came from an instant pack. Definitely a skip next time. The salmon was delicious. Smooth, well seasoned, and a fair portion of salmon. I don't remember the cheesy scallop much except that it was super heavy. Maybe if we didn't order the soba we would've enjoyed its richness more. As a group of 3, the service was fairly good. We waited a few minutes and ended up having to share a long table with another party. They were PACKED at 7pm on a weekday. The vibe is a good mix of bustling but intimate. I wouldn't say it's like a true hole-in-the-wall izakaya since I'm pretty sure most patrons were there for the food versus to grab a drink. It's understandable though, the unbeatable price point (average $18 for an entree) and reasonable portions are a pretty rare find in midtown these days. We left feeling full and satisfied. A trusty spot that won't break the bank!

9/10 Overall: we waited abt 25 mins at around 6:15 but the food was so good. We were able to try four different dishes for $28 each for 2 people including tip and tax. My fav was the salmon carpaccio, the flavors were so strong and delish! Salmon Carpaccio $10.95: 5/5 best raw salmon I've ever gotten. So fresh and the sauce made it taste SO good. And for $11? I will dream about this. Salmon sashimi taco $7.95: 4/5 packed with avocado and salmon! It was super crispy and the fish was super fresh. Kimchi cream udon $14.95: 4/5 super creamy and the noodles were a perfect chewiness. The sauce was the perfect amount of saltiness and spice.
Great cool simple restaurant
We recommend this restaurant to everyone who loves simple and very good food. It is a bit loud and chaotic but super good. Also great value for money. Highly recommended
Good restaurant but...
We came for lunch twice during our stay in New York. As indicated in some comments, you have to look for it before finding it because it is located underground. Very popular with the Asian population, it is a sign of quality. Easy booking. Our first meal at 12 p.m. with a menu offering a wide variety of choices (chicken fries, sashimi, skewers, noddles, sushi...). It was excellent. Good value for money. On the other hand, we came back a second time after 1:15 p.m. and the menu was no longer the same...one wondered if we were in the same establishment. My son was disappointed to have the rather mediocre canned tuna rolls. So I advise coming at the start of the service with a broader menu.
Super yummy and good atmosphere
Great ambiance in the basement, great food, good service, our first dinner out in nyc - couldn‘t be better. Lots of locals We loved it!
Very good inexpensive Japanese
You absolutely have to remember to reserve your table because the place is in high demand. The dishes are plentiful and very good. The budget is very reasonable
Rude, Chinese food sold for Japanese
After about 30 minutes of waiting we sat at a table that was a bit narrow for two people. My partner had a decently made salmon sashimi and creamy noodles mixed with cream and garlic as if it were raining. However, at the invitation of the waiter who served us at the table, I was recommended the "chef Experience", a selection of sushi and sashimi prepared by the chef. I kindly point out to the waiter that I am allergic to eel and therefore cannot eat it, therefore I ask if the only piece of sushi in which this type of fish is present can be changed. The waiter replies that it is in no way possible to modify the dish and that he could have done me the courtesy of removing the single piece of sushi without any change in the price. Basically, I pay the same to eat one less piece. It seems absurd to me that I can't modify a nigiri for an allergic customer. Finally, once the bill arrives, I decide not to leave any tip given my terrible experience. The waiter gets annoyed telling me that in NY it is compulsory. I point out to him that it is actually "suggested" and that given the terrible experience I choose not to pay for it. Terrible experience, believe me!
I came here with my friends to celebrate her birthday.
I had kimchi cream udon, and it's absolutely delicious. Will return here again!
We made a reservation at 9pm and almost all of the tables
We made a reservation at 9pm and almost all of the tables were filled up. Be prepared to wait at least 30min without a reservation unless you arrive right when they open. With a reservation, we were seated and served quickly! We ordered the kimchi cream udon, seared salmon tataki, and katsu don. Everything was delicious and fresh! It gets a bit loud on a Saturday evening, and you'll need to shout a bit to have a conversation but that's part of the experience :) The previous time I'd come with friends during lunch time. We all ordered donburi lunch special (offered 12-3pm) which was a great deal! The orders came with a generous portion of fresh sashimi as well as sides. I would definitely return for the lunch special in particular!
Worst service I've seen in years.
We were a group of 3, walked in at around 5PM on a weekday, half the place is empty. Dude leads us to this table for two and jammed in an extra seat. Space was so tight that the chair was backed up against another table, customers at that table were looking all confused too. Sat down, just plates and water cup was taking up 75% of the table. AND it was shaking so much that water kept spilling. Asked to switch and I couldn't figure out what this dude was saying but basically said no when half the place is empty. Then he found some random shit on the floor to make the table stable, lol. Bruh opens the menu drops it on my friends plate and napkin. That shit is NOT clean. At this point we are like yup fuck this and we left.
Delicious place ! Gets extremely crowded though.
The price is fair. The croquettes were delicious though. The rolls were tasty: we like the empire roll ( I believe it was called), the mew roll, and the last one is the volcano roll
Definite good food! Warm service as well.
I pretty much enjoy the vibe as well. Will go there again.

Was craving a non omakase sushi spot while visiting NYC and was brought here by my friends!! Very reasonably priced and high quality food!! We tried various items. My favorites were the aburrí salmon nigiri, the creamy kimchi udon, and mew special roll!! I also really liked the basement, rustic interior vibe. I'd definitely come back to this spot!!
Try Izakaya
Non-descriptive folding sign in front of a door leading to a basement restaurant. Enter and you are transported to a Japanese true Izakaya maybe located in Shinjuku Tokyo. Industrial walls, concrete floor, hanging strings of lights and an open kitchen. An underground, underworld where Japanese is shouted to fill air. Not too loud music I can recognize or sing to from the 80s makes for a cool sound track. The food is delicious and straight from the real J-Town. This is what the business men and women have for their after work meet ups. The fish in fish dishes is really fresh Try the avocado/ tofu salad with miso with finer dressing. 2 kinds of fried chicken (soft fried with creamy potato salad or crispy style). Octopus balls which are equal to Osaka’s famous. Four to five dishes is enough for a couple. Sapporo and Kirin on tap. A fun authentic meal. Reasonably priced.
We made a reservation on the wrong day but the person
We made a reservation on the wrong day but the person working was kind enough to change it for us as there happened to be a free table for 2 at 5:30 when we went. The food here was good enough. For the omu soba it was an interesting idea but missed some marks. The sauces were too heavy and the egg + noodle could have stood out a bit more. The agedashi tofu was good, and their yellowtail carpaccio was good too although i couldnt really taste the apple ponzu sauce. I got their kiwi cocktail which was very sweet so if you're into that, would recommend.
Amazingly good food for shockingly reasonable prices!
This restaurant has fairly priced food that is HEAVENLY. I ordered the takoyaki, and the yaki cheese potato. I also recommend the creamy kimchi udon! Quick service, told a 20 minute wait but it ended up being 10. Their desserts are amazing too, the tiramisu was great and the cheesecake was my favorite I’ve ever had! (Whole life) I didn’t try the mochi ice cream so I can’t say if it’s good but it looked good!
I keep coming to this place for excellent, consistent food
I keep coming to this place for excellent, consistent food and a cozy ambiance! Their hours are kind of weird, but it's definitely worth a detour. I adore the mew special roll for a creamy seared salmon that melts on your tongue, and the kimchi cream udon that is perfection incarnated.
One of my favorite hidden gems in all of NYC.
You've likely walked right past it and had no idea. I've tried several things on the menu at this point and loved every single one. Definitely worth the wait if there is one!
Loved the food & atmosphere of this place! Cozy Japanese
Loved the food & atmosphere of this place! Cozy Japanese fusion restaurant with such flavorful dishes. The kimchi cream udon lived up to the hype - the sauce is amazing if you love kimchi and creamy/cheesy pastas. The chicken nanban was delicious with the egg salad that came with it - just wish the chicken was crispier. Didn't expect much from the ramen but the broth was so delicious and noodles were perfectly cooked. Perfect date night spot!
Top Japanese
Very tasty food and the cocktail was great too! Restaurant is in a basement, reservations necessary. Basic furnishings, available music (we sat under a speaker). Service was smooth and the food was really great. Will probably go there again this holiday.
Fixed stop
New York ? It means a fixed stop at Izakaya!!! Small messy noisy place all served by sushi, udon, sashini and much, much more really. Everything exceptional, highly recommended place!
Underground… quality
Nice place, without aesthetic pretensions (it is located under the stairs and furnished in a minimal way) but with excellent Japanese cuisine. Really good and plentiful dishes, low prices, a surprise considering the New York average. There are many young people who frequent it and for this reason it is a bit... noisy, but I would define it as a rare pearl.
Fabulous korean and japanese food -best ramen
For NYC a virtual bargain- service is hi- energy and attracts a largely young asian clientele. Food is absolutely spot on and a fantastic tantan men. Service is friendly and fast - so dont expect to hang around waiting for the bill- as there is always a line. Overall, highly recommended
Certainly a must visit for lunch or dinner
We arrived for lunch without reservation. Only needed to wait 15 minutes, even though the place was full. Amazing food and the service was super. We can really recommend the cocktails, which are freshly made.
Izakaya Mew was awesome
Great food and vibe. Don’t get the ribs. Everything else was excellent
Go!!
There were 2 people in our party. Did not have/make reservations, but we were seated very quickly. Best salmon sashimi I’ve ever had. Great service. I would definitely recommend going here. Kimchi Cream Udon was fantastic. Tuna Tartar was fantastic as well

Forget trying to snipe reservations online by waking up early and booking top restaurants at Carbone or Tatiana or Cote or 4Charles. After 2.5 months of booking reservations by setting up alarms, waking up early to sell appointments. It’s very hard to cash out on this app. During cash out, you have to pay $5 fee +3% transactions fee and max payout per day is $150.
Advice to new users:
- do not mass book reservations
- fill bids only
- don’t try to book reservations online, you need connections and call the restaurant
After putting in about 40 hours of work, I’ve made about $750 sale on this platform but gotten paid $0. Take this with a grain of salt.

I’m sorry to hear these negative experiences some of you have experienced. There is definitely a learning curve. The main reason the listings are not selling is that too many new sellers have been listing hundreds if not thousands of reservations for sale. If there are 30 reservations listed for sale at the same restaurant on the same night maybe 2 will sell. That will leave 28 unsold reservations and if you want to sell you would have to be the lowest price listed. The value is gone if you have to drop your price to $10.
Several sellers have offered training but sadly no one seemed interested.
The money you have earned is yours but you just need to keep your numbers up.

I’m sorry to see your numbers so low with 397 unsold and zero sold. You should reach out to whoever sponsored you as a concierge intern. That person should be happy to help you get moving in the right direction. I have sponsored a few people and I always take the time to help them with their sales.

Yeah I did exactly what you just said not to do. Mass booked. Tried different markets. Got black listed on Resy. Found other oddball places people keep looking for but STILL have not made one sale. And it will statistically take me 100% of the next 100 sales to get paid per this new sell-through rule. I used this as a fun little side challenge during my down time at work and if any of the 600+ connections I added ever take off, it might be worth the “claim” Lol but to hear you say after $750 in sales you have yet to see a penny, I wish I had this advice 2 months ago myself before I made the mental commitment 🙄
