A pretty bad experience over all, server was not very quick at service, didn't give separate plates, charged me $12 for a simple bottle of water, food itself was mid. Only reason it's not a 1 star is the pretty place is pretty cozy and warm. Although the cleanup rate is bad.

I'm not sure what happened to this place but the previous chef needs to come back. This used to be my favorite place to dine with my daughter and the sushi is not dry and horrible. The shrimp tempura is now 1/3 of the size as before. Please let us know when the old chef returns.

Was so hoping this place was going to live up to the reviews on Yelp. To start with the positive, the service and hospitality were very good. The staff tries hard to make you comfortable and is most accommodating. But the quality of the food is extremely poor and the preparation is dismal. The space is very small and the place is awkward and is not comfortable to enjoy a meal there. They have a great location. Too bad the execution is so poorly done. It was far too cold to sit outside when we were there so can't comment on the outside space.
Be the first to ReplyORIGIN: Hiramasa opened its doors in fall 2021.
LOCATION; Hiramasa is located on corner of Madison and East 93rd Street. CONCEPT: The restaurant primarily serves traditional sushi through bar seating. This allows customers to see the craft of sushi master. AMBIANCE: The interior of the restaurant complements the dishes served, with pale wood-lined walls, black marble tiled floors, and relaxing music. The restaurant is like entering a jewelry box -- the jewels being the glistening fish served on glazed plates. Space is limited, with seating for 9 at the sushi bar at ground level, with more available in an upstairs loft (3 cafe tables and another sushi bar that seats 6). For someone who was in the area to accompany a friend whose husband was undergoing heart surgery, Hiramasa during opening at weekday lunch hour proved to be an oasis from the bustle and noise of the hospital waiting area. FOOD: I was initially drawn to the restaurant by the cheerful festoon of lanterns on its awning, as well as the need to rectify my experience of sushi after bravely trying a container of prepared sushi roll in the Mount Sinai lobby. I ordered a salmon hand roll, and enjoyed the crisp crunch of the dried seaweed and quality of the salmon. An eel roll was tasty as well, although less traditional with the addition of sauces and avocado. (I recommend sticking to traditional sushi to fully enjoy the quality of fish served, as the "specialty" rolls blur the taste of fish.) I also tried the miso soup, which appeared to incorporate a different type of miso paste than I had previously experienced. SERVICE: Service was patient and attentive, especially as we had restaurant to ourselves! TIP: A curbside enclosure with cloth-lined tables allows extended seating. Since the majority of seating inside the restaurant is bar side, large groups may prefer this option. Since the restaurant's interior is unusually small, one plus is that the upstairs loft and/or ground level can be fully reserved for events. Bathroom is upstairs.

This is the best sushi in the city! I always bring my friends here and no matter how much I hype it up, they are blown away time after time. Erin was our server and she made our experience sublime! She was knowledgeable, efficient, and beyond personable. I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone in the UES looking for incredible dishes and immaculate and enthusiastic service!
Be the first to ReplyWe arrived at 8:20 for an 8:30 reservation.
We were told the sushi bar for our $400 omakase meal was full and to walk down the block to a bar and come back at 8:40. We returned, and they still didn't have our spots ready. The waiter asked to seat us in the "chalet" which I assumed was a separate part of the restaurant. It was... it was outside on Valentine's day in February. It was cold. My date said it was OK and tried to assuage my embarrassment. The food was excellent, but the plates seemed to come with random long pauses. The waiters kept leaving the door to the chalet open. I had to keep rising to close it. My date and I were dining in our coats. To their credit, the waiters recognized their failure and provided me with Yuzu sake. My pregnant date couldn't drink it. They had no caffeine or alcohol-free beverages for her. At least the food was good, and the waiters were cognizant of the problem. This was not an omakase experience. This was not seeing the sushi prepared at the bar and having the piece explained to you. I can't believe I paid 400 dollars only to embarrass myself. 3/10 stars.
Be the first to ReplyLovely food and service.
And the outdoor "sidewalk shed" is comically nice--they call it "the chalet."
Be the first to ReplyUnequivocally the best sushi in the upper east side.
Ever since moving here, I have been to too many "alright" sushi spots, with none wowing me. Hiramasa did. From the ambiance to the service to the freshness of the fish to the expertise of our sushi chef Isaac, everything about Hiramasa was A+. I would recommend traveling here even if you aren't in the area; the experience is that good.
