Don Julio Palermo Reviews from The Last Year
Love love loved! Wow.
Luckily had a 7pm reservation and it was confirmed via WhatsApp. You get welcomed with a glass of champagne. Then after taken to your seat you receive bread, an empanada for each person. The empanada was delicious! We ordered a steak to share between two, Brussels sprouts, and fries. It was all sooo good! Definitely enough food. The Brussels sprouts came out cold through and were small. However the flavor was great. Then for desert we ordered one of the ice creams but they brought out two. One was on the house. Wow, so much food. Ice cream was so creamy. The restaurant overall service wise felt very US as I felt like they were trying to get people out quickly. It makes sense because they have reservations. However, it's not very like Argentina in that sense. I would still absolutely come back though!

The process of getting into the restaurant is very interesting. You make a reservation and then you have to stand in line and wait. Once we sat down the service was attentive. I'm not from Argentina, so definitely make sure to describe the temperature of the meat properly. Our was overcooked, they graciously re cooked a new one and it made a HUGE difference. The chorizo was unmemorable, had better ones elsewhere. Personally I found other places to be better and cheaper.

I've been to Don Julio twice--before they received their Michelin star and after. Let me start off by saying that I enjoyed my food, but was it worth the price? Umm, not so sure. Our tab was over $200 without buying a bottle of wine. The place was packed--I mean BUSY! For this kind of money in Argentina, I was expecting a more spacious dining experience, but it was cramped and loud. If you want good meat, go! However, I do think it's overpriced.

There is a reason Don Julio is a must, it 100% lives up to expectations. The quality of the food, service, wine, and the overall experience was spot on. We ordered the tomahawk, mashed potatoes, arugula salad. The steak was perfect. Also if you like your meat on the medium rare side they REALLY do cook it medium rare. The sides were good! They ran out of oyster mushrooms so clearly that was a seasonal hit of the day. We also had dessert which was a simple ice cream with chocolate sauce. Incredibly delicious for an extremely common dessert! Totally worth it and compared to USA steak prices it's a steal!
I was expecting more, honestly.
We racked up a $200+ bill on dinner for two (we didn't even get a bottle of wine). The steaks were good but not best restaurant in the world quality. We eat steak like this all the time at home, so don't fly to Argentina for the steak (lol). The fries were good, the ice cream was good. Nothing was amazing. The service was mostly good. Our waiter was good, the first waiter was kind of making fun of us for not speaking Spanish. Whatever... the restaurant is cramped and tables are right on top of each other. The vibe was kind of off, as I felt like the couple sitting 6 inches away from us were eavesdropping the whole time. Meh overall.

Celebrated my sister's birthday here and it was one of the best meals I've ever eaten. Loved how everyone gets a welcome glass of wine upon check in plus a mini empanada while waiting. The steak was cooked to perfection. The arugula salad (non pictured) was also incredible and much needed with all the meat. Also tried the oyster mushrooms, mashed potatoes, and fries. Apart from the arugula salad, the fries were my favourite side. Little bit salty for my taste but cooked very well. Mushrooms and mashed potatoes were a bit bland but did not take away from the experience. Service was great and they even have a special birthday dessert you can't order from the menu. The staff coming out to sing happy birthday made it very special!
One of the hottest if not hottest reservations in Buenos
One of the hottest if not hottest reservations in Buenos Aires. Which wasn't easy to snag. But with a tons of persistence and perseverance, we made the list. By the time we arrived there was a nice line already formed alongside the building. We verified our name on the list and too joined the line. To our surprise we were served a glass of champagne and even topped off before being escorted to our intimate table indoors. We were greeted with an empanada seconds after being seated and they were delicious. I wouldn't say 'best in BA' but they were good. And I'll never say no to complimentary bread and the trio dip was a plus. If you take any of my advice please order a tomato salad or three. You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not. Holy fresh. The steak were very good and massive in size. Had we known ordering a portion of the size were an option, that's the way to go. I would've loved to have known that going on but here we are. Potatoes were good. But again, I'd order at least two more rounds of tomato salad. The service was impeccable. And I mean it; top notch. From the moment we were in line to the second we crossed the street. The attention to detail, friendliness, and warm welcome made for a fantastic date night. We were even given a private tour of their wine cellar topped with a tasting. Our first experience at Don Julio did not disappoint.

The best steakhouse in the world with a great menu! You have to go to this place when in BA! Service is great and a really cool operation !
Dissapointed
Really overrated! Went in expecting the best steak in Argentina but I’ve had better in chain resteraunts in England! Dont know how they grew such a good reputation when the steaks are average. The branding, vibe and staff are nice. The fries are great but steak so disappointing. They provided gluten free bread which was nice
Best of the best
Astonishingly good. Ribeye was the best, by a distance, I’ve ever eaten. Dessert was decadently good. Wines include some of the very best Malbec’s that are to be had. Service also was great. Don Julio is expensive but it’s worth it.
They deserve their Michelin Star
Over the years I have avoided this too-known steakhouse. Mistake!! Since they now have a Michelin Star, I decided to finally go = and I am Very Happy I did. I got on the waitlist 2 months prior and finally got a reservation and was promptly seated. Beautiful, old building. Impressed with the quality of the steaks that I saw lined up waiting to be grilled. Service attentive. Large wine list of many options in different price points. And the steaks = cooked perfectly, tender and delicious. We enjoyed every minute and will surely return on our next visit to Buenos Aires.
This reservation was difficult to get, however my hotel
This reservation was difficult to get, however my hotel concierge was able to get a 7pm for me. A very large crowd of people outside, and when you check in, the hostess gives you a glass of Chandon champagne. Seated outside immediately, tables were extremely close, chairs not too comfortable. Food- ordered the Prime Rib Steak ($59,300 pesos = $70) and fries. The steak was gristly, fatty and still very tough. The price of this steak was way overpriced since I don't think this was prime beef - very disappointed in this meal. Service - very efficient for my table, However, the waiter overcharged the people next to me, and instead of 2 glasses of Malbec they charged for 2 bottles of Malbec. When the guys next to me had me examine their bill, I brought it up to the waiter and he looked surprised that I caught this error, they reversed the charge, all is good, but we all decided that the hype was too much for this restaurant, the prices were outrageous and this place is pretty much one and done.

The best steak in Buenos Aires! The outdoor seating is great during late summertime. And the champagne flutes while waiting for seats are a very welcoming touch.
Just didn't live up to hype.
Went to 3 other steakhouses in Argentina (1 in Buenos Aires and 2 in El Calafete) and all were better. Service was really slow also.
well, everyone in Buenos Aires (and around the world) knows
well, everyone in Buenos Aires (and around the world) knows the hype around the (one) Michelin-starred Don Julio. Locals tend to complain that it's an overpriced tourist trap, but at the same time begrudgingly admit that it's an outstanding experience. This is my third trip to BA, and I finally made it. And it's totally worth it. We came for lunch thinking it might be easier to get a reservation and we wouldn't be compelled to eat too much haha. When you arrive they give you a glass of bubbly and if you're there without a reservation (they take walk-ins) they keep refilling your glass so you'll be nice and toasty when you get seated. The service is outstanding, and the restaurant is gorgeous inside. Some nice quiet wood paneled rooms and other larger seating areas. When seated they bring you an excellent mini-empanada and a beautiful heirloom tomato with olive oil and salt that they quarter at the table. But you're here for the steak, and I have to admit, that of all the steak dinners I've had in BA (literally dozens) the meat here is on another level. Perfection. It's pricey, so prepare yourself. for two people, splitting one steak, two sides and one dessert and no alcohol (easily one meal for one person but it was lunch so we ate half the normal amount) it was $100 USD, which by NYC or SF prices is cheap but here it's way beyond the price of other great steakhouses. But also absolutely worth every peso (ha!) and I will probably come back again (and again).

Try to get a reservation - definitely worth a visit! We tried a few months in advance to get a dinner reservation, but even on a waitlist, no luck. So we tried showing up when they opened at 11:30am for lunch and got in! SO glad we did! The experience was so lovely and every detail was spot on. Food was fantastic. Staff was kind and attentive. Great wine selection. When we had a small issue at our table, they took us on a brief tour of the wine cellar while they fixed the table. A nice touch. Try the Prime Rib here - Medium Rare. And the Heirloom tomato salad is refreshing and perfect.
Exceeded expectations.
Definitely a fantastic meal. Impeccable service. Highly recommended. Wonderful ambiance.
While in Argentina and Chile we ate a lot of steak.
We could not leave without trying Don Julio which is touted to be the best steak restaurant in the world. We made a reservation for a group of 4 a month before and I would recommend that you don't miss this place. We were seated outside but it was a cool evening and were seated under a covered area in case of rain. Champagne was served and complimentary to start the night. We ordered two rib eyes, One Fillet Mignon, and Short Ribs. All of them were outstanding and far superior to the steaks we had eaten at other restaurants on our trip. Definitely try any side dish with tomatoes, another. The salads were dressed perfectly. The waiter was super helpful and help us select wines for our meal. Don't miss dessert... we got two to share. We made a mistake though. There was a tomato tasting menu (menu in the pics). I thought it was a vegetarian option. When I looked at it more carefully when I got home I thought, Damn, We should have done this- The price point and opportunity to try many small bites would have been amazing... Oh well, a good excuse to go back to Buenos Aires!

Don Julio is often considered the best steak house in the world. It's expressed in every bite of food, on the ambiance of the rooms, and the accessability for vegetarians. They don't just provide food, they provide a wonderful experience. The steaks are the stars of the show. You can order most cuts if beef from ribeye to flank, ribs to t bones. They're savory, succulent, and perfectly cooked. There's even a menu focusing on tomatoes. A four course tomato based menu features tomato complimented by different cuts of meat each time. It's a wonderful way to express their creativity in a unique way for a steak house. Vegetarians will love it here. There's a full vegetarian side dish menu in addition to a four course tomato menu without meat. This is truly a restaurant for everyone...if you can get a reservation. The best way to do that is by texting their WhatsApp number directly, not by using their website - although either works. Sit inside if you can. Outside can get hot or drippy in the rain. Plus inside you can watch the dishes being prepared, or maybe be seated in the tomato room. That room is covered in tomatoes on the vine decorating walls and chandeliers. The only improvements that could be made here are in the wait staff. Some team members are pretty soft spoken or too passive. That aside, the empanadas are delicious, the steaks are wonderful, and having so many vegetarian options sets this establishment apart.
This is a steakhouse you don't want to miss when you are in
This is a steakhouse you don't want to miss when you are in Buenos Aires. We were lucky enough to get reservations for two different days while we were in town. We also got to try many different dishes as we shared all the dishes family style. My favorite steak out of the four we tried was the flank steak. The most tender was the tenderloin. My husband loved the rib eye and tomahawk steak. The heirloom tomato salads we amazing. We also liked the grilled zucchini. The French fries were so crispy and delicious. My dad loved the ice cream. We tried a lot of dishes and they were all excellent. Try to get reservations a month in advance and get on their early access reservations. If you don't, they did allow walk ins, but you may have to wait for a while. We sat outside the first time and sat inside the second time. We loved watching them grill. Excellent experience!
No wonder it is in the top 5 restaurants in Latin America.
We made reservations more than a month in advance, we were a party of 5, so couldn't take any chances. While waiting to be seated we were welcomed with complimentary champagne to toast for one of the best meals in town. We ordered 3 different types of meat or "Cortes" all of which were delicious. I'm not sure you can go wrong with any, but if you ask me for my favourite I'll definitely say el vacio. We got help from the waiter to pair or meal with wine and then got lucky enough to be invited to visit the wine cellar and get a small private tour. Make sure you make room for dessert as you need to try their ice cream!
