A huge disappointment
We went to the 1640 house with two friends. We had been there every year that we visit in the summer. It wasn’t very crowded, but the waitress was not very good. She was fine attending other people, but she barely came to the table for us I ordered the pot roast, which I had last year and it was delicious. It was more gristle than meat. This time in the carrots were barely cooked.. my two friends ordered the pork slow roasted. There’s as well was covered with so much fat and gristle that we ate very little. The waitress asked if we wanted to take home boxes we said no and we said we want dessert. Again, she had no problem attending to a table. That was a couple of tables to the last of us. In fact every time she went there, I tried to waiver attention, but couldn’t get it. Finally, I stood up and asked for the check and said the service was atrocious and she said I can’t help because somebody got sick and I didn’t even want to entertain the fact that she was waiting on the people who were ordering extra bottles of wine five times as much as she came to our table, very very disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyFamily Celebration
Our family of eight reserved a table for a multi-person birthday celebration at this historic site. We were seated in a room by ourselves - a former bedroom with damask drapes and at least 4 old prints of George Washington. But no sign that Geo. Washington slept there! Cocktails were yummy and food was good - HUGE servings! I had the home style meatloaf with cheesy mashed potatoes and fresh green beans. All was delicious and I brought half home for an ample meal the next night. Service was fine considering how busy the place was.
Be the first to ReplyNice Dinner
This is a nice and large restaurant in an older building. The menu is large and varied, the food is good, the portions are large and prices are quite reasonable. The cocktails and wine both featured very generous pours. Service was a bit slow, though very friendly. This was a nice choice for a more traditional New England dinner.

Vibrant bar scene, in a lovely old antique NE colonial home; Beautiful fireplaces and hard wood floors with greens for the holiday season. The pumpkin ravioli with butter and sage was delightful. Well worth the visit!
Be the first to ReplyOld New England Restaurant
Haven't been here for at least 7 years. Decor is still colonial and attractive. Hard choice between 3 and 4 stars, but 3 won when Hart House is compared to the many very good restaurants in this area. My wife started with the Stuffed Quahog Clams. Two good sized. Good but tangy. She guessed that there was too much pepper. My son and I both got the Pan Roasted Oysters. Unusual way to fix oysters and very good. Side of spinach and bacon. For a main, my wife got the Shepard's Pie. Very good (we lived in the UK 3 years, so one of her favorites), but too much. My son had the NY Strip Steak. Ordered rare and it was. But again, too much pepper---no reason to ruin a good steak with pepper. I got the Seafood Risotto. Good, but not exciting. And half the plate was filled with green beans, too many. Noted that the menu you see posted on the web is not the same as the menu you actually get. Good beer menu, including draft. Good wine and drink menu. Atmosphere nice but soundproofing lacking in the dining room---we had to listen to the conversations from two nearby tables. Good service.
Be the first to ReplyGood Plain Food
We ate in the tavern, enjoying the comfortable, wing-back chairs. Service was good even though the place was crowded. This is a seafood/steak restaurant so I ordered the mixed grill which consisted of steak tips, a homemade sausage and barbecue ribs. It was disappointing. The steak was tough and the mashed potatoes and green beans were ho-hum. The portions were large so I took a doggy bag home with the ribs where I can eat them with my fingers. If you like plain New England food in a nice atmosphere this is the place for you.

Food and service great. Salad no longer comes with entree but we understand with the price of food being so high. Love the atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyAnother memorable experience at 1640 Hart House
Excellent service, exceptional meal and great cocktails in a cozy, colonial atmosphere at the 1640 Hart House in Ipswich. And the value is unmatched.
Be the first to ReplyRude hostess
Been here a few times. Food is great. Went the other night at 4:30 which is opening time. We were told they were full which was disappointing since we didn’t realize we should have made a reservation. They actually ended up being accommodating but when I kiddingly said we will sit where they served the chicken pot pie the hostess informed us it was not on the menu. I proceeded to tell her it was on the menu on their website she proceeded to give excuses which I’m sure were true but the ATTITUDE is what was annoying. I would think she could have been a little nicer about the whole situation . If you are greeting customers you should have a better temperament. That hostess needs an attitude adjustment when dealing with the public. Our waitress was very attentive and accommodating especially since she had to run up and down stairs.
Be the first to ReplyWhy did we wait so long to return???
Been Too Long! Met brother and sister in law for dinner and oh boy, why haven't we been back sooner! Love the ambiance and decor. Very romantic. I had the Onion soup and it was absolutely divine!!! Has to be right up there with the best, the calamari was so crisp and light, outstanding. Rare tuna was loved by one, two had the eggplant lasagna, that could not have been more delectable, loved by both. Rack of lamb was a beautiful presentation with a mountain of perfectly seasoned green beans. Desert had crazy huge portions, bread pudding, apple crisp and chocolate chip Sunday was so well presented and much enjoyed by the desert lovers. Can't wait to bring our adult kids to enjoy this experience with us soon!
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful surprise !
We were very pleased with our dinner several days ago. The Seafood Risotto , and onion soup, I enjoyed immensely ! My wife was disappointed with the clam chowder however , very thin in taste. We especially enjoyed the " Keepers Room " Hope to visit again in the future. Victor
Be the first to ReplyLove the Tavern…..
Enjoyed the most wonderful dinners at the Tavern with our friends.Meatloaf dinner and steak tips and martinis are perfection! Ambiance and staff are truly exceptional (thank you Cindy)! Looking forward to next visit sooner than later.
Be the first to ReplyHart House is Tops
Once again, the Hart House checks all the boxes: drinks, food, service (by Jackie), and ambiance. The flower displays are beautiful. Unfortunately, the Hart House no longer has the outdoor tent for those preferring to eat outside---very costly for the restaurant. Luckily, there are two small outdoor patio areas and we were able to reserve a spot (although not for my wife's birthday). The pistachio and chocolate turtle martinis were delicious (no skimping on alcohol). The ONION SOUP GRATIN ($11) with Crouton and gruyere cheese was savory, but the NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER ($9) GF Thin cream base with bacon, clams, and potatoes was disappointing--small amount, not creamy (the menu description did note "thin,") and not much in the way of clams. My wife loved her SEAFOOD RISOTTO( $33) GF with lobster, shrimp, and scallops, cooked with rich risotto rice, cream, asiago cheese, and fresh herbs, and served with green beans. My (fresh) swordfish ($24) was cooked to perfection and quite succulent. Although the peanut butter/chocolate dessert was not as good as we remembered, it was still satisfying. We look forward to another visit in the near future. Full bar; free on-site parking; indoor/limited outdoor seating; major credit cards accepted; handicapped accessible.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and service in a cozy atmosphere
The historic cozy New England atmosphere combined with the classic menu items, food quality, and attentive service, made this a memorable dining experience last Saturday night. The steak au poivre was amazing. We also had the beet salad and crusted tuna. All dishes were top-notch with ample portions. The steak meal was large enough for two people. We finished with a creme brulee dessert - made to perfection.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding dinners at 1640 Hart House
Last night we dined at the Hart House and ordered the parmesan crusted sole and the pork schnitzel dish. Both were presented perfectly (both had excellent flavor, the schnitzel was tender and the sole had a very nice lemon caper sauce). The servers were very nice, attentive, and efficient. We will be back again.

my wife enjoyed the scallops. my sole was not good.
These restaurants need to offer half portions for seniors.
Professional service and dining during difficult staffing times
We have eaten at this historical restaurant many times over the years. The food is excellent and worth the price. The mussels are the best I have ever had. Preparation and presentation is 1st class. I would ask consumers to remember that the restaurant industry struggled with the pandemic and now with a staffing shortage. Adrian was our wait staff, but also a bartender. She knew the menu and was most hospitable. This restaurant is well worth the trip. We have never had a bad experience. Masks were required for guests , if not vaccinated. Bar is not open at this time, but the drinks still get delivered to the table. Outside tent is also available for dinning. Call for reservations.
Be the first to ReplySuch a Nice Experience
This is where the family (of ten) celebrated the Matriarch's (Mother, grandmother, great grandmother, wife) birthday. We happened to go on Father's Day, but that didn't matter. From arrival to departure and everything in between, our experience here was terrific. With live music playing near the tent area, everyone enjoyed cocktails , appetizers , entrees, and a birthday treat. The service by the delightful Sydney was very attentive, and food so tasty, although one diner thought her fish dish arrived other than ordered.
This was my first visit, and I look forward to returning before summer's end to enjoy another nice evening on one of the outdoor dining deck areas. The large tent where we ate was quite spacious and with definitely well spaced seating arrangements. We had such a nice experience
There is ample parking, a full service bar, indoor and outdoor dining, major credit cards accepted, handicapped accessible, and a menu that should please all tastes.
Hart House is currently understaffed, and is looking to hire. Call 978-356-1640.
Amazing dinner
My nephew is having his rehearsal dinner @ the Hart house in June, so we went
to check out the room and food on Saturday night. It was absolutely
delicious. Service, drink, food, etc. was fantastic!! Can't wait to go back
for the rehearsal dinner!
First Rate
We have gone to this restaurant for many years, but especially at Easter. We missed it last year because of the shut down. This year Easter was our first outing. It did not disappoint . The food is excellent. The lamb and tuna were melt in one's mouth. Presentation was a work of art. The tables were well placed and flatware was sealed. Bottled water provided for the table. Wait staff were professional and attentive. Due to the age and small rooms of this historical restaurant, wait staff have to be good at small stairways and servicing many areas. The menu for a holiday gives a wide range of selections. One cannot go wrong with this restaurant for any time of the year. They do offer some outside dinning.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food in Historic Setting
I revisited this restaurant for the first time in twenty years (when we lived in Ipswich and went there often). It remains a top-notch restaurant with a full spectrum of choices on the menu and wine list. There is a bar area, two dining areas and a large room for events. The dining areas have low light, as befits an old building, but this makes it romantic. The stuffed quahogs are special. The two haddock entrees are excellent, as are the duck and prime rib. Prices are reasonably for fine dining on the North Shore.
Be the first to ReplyFood is good & the restaurant is pretty
It was my first time eating here and I really enjoyed it. I brought my kids & I was pleasantly surprised that they have a kid's menu. Although- as with some places- their kid's mac & cheese was from a box, which I am not a fan of. All 5 of us enjoyed our food. I had the baked haddock which was good, but it came with mashed potatoes & roasted sweet potatoes. I would have preferred green beans or some other veggie instead of 2 kinds of potatoes. Hubby got the Hart House chicken (pasta dish) which I tried & it was very good. The restaurant was very pretty and our waitress was very nice. We will be back soon.
Be the first to ReplyWeird on a late Saturday afternoon
We went with friends who love this place. At their suggestion, we arrived at 4:50 PM on a Saturday afternoon. (I noticed the time). 40 minutes later we were seated. Our friends had called in to get on a "wait list" or whatever they call it. If he had not done that, there would have been no way to get in. The larger spaces were reserved for a private Christmas party (yes, I get it, it is that time of year). And several smaller rooms were occupied by private groups; looked like family gatherings. So the rest of us were limited to the bar area (crushed) and a smaller room. While waiting, we had no way to get a drink. No one offered, and we were in constant danger of getting run into by waitresses in black ninja outfits running by. Finally, we got seated. The chairs at the dining table were amazingly low. True, I am on the short side; but I could barely see the top of the table. I had to sit on a heavy coat (provided by our friend), but even then I was looking up.
Now for the better news: The drinks were huge and well prepared. Since our friends knew the place, they suggested we order the onion soup and then consider anything else after eating the soup. Sure enough, the soup came in the biggest bowl I can remember in a restaurant. I had made the mistake of eating a roll first. The rolls were undistinguished. The soup was good, and I could not finish it all. My wife managed to get hers all gone. One of us ordered something that came with French fries that seemed to come from leftovers at McDonalds down the street. Our friends like dessert, so we all shared one piece of cake (OK).
I can't comment on the rest of the menu since we never got there. If it wasn't for the mob scene, this would be a charming place with colonial kitsch.
The small private rooms looked very nice, and the families in them looked happy. Maybe we would give this place a try for a future family gathering. Or try a weekday evening. Not in holiday season.
